The two principal ferry lines are: Toremar and Moby Lines, the principal crossing reaches Portoferraio in approximately one hour. Portoferraio is Elba’s main town and harbor. br>There are also fast ferries and hydrofoils that reach Portoferraio. One can also choose to cross and reach the minor harbors of Rio Marina and Cavo. For Rio Marina the crossing is cheaper and slightly shorter. In case one decides to reach the Island by plane in La Pila Marina di Campo there’s a small but rather efficient airport that during the season connects the Island with major Italian, Swiss and German cities. For whom owns there own boat Elba has five main harbors that allow them to stay. The Island of Elba is the third largest Italian island after Sicily and Sardinia. People commonly think of it as a small island but in truth it isn’t. To cross the island from east to west, from Sant’Andrea to Cavo, requires at least one hour by car. Elba’s territory is prevalently mountainous and hillyit’s highest peak is that of the Monte Capanne 1019m, that can be reached with a funicular cabine. The island is divided in eight town halls (municipalities): Portoferraio, Marciana Marina, Marciana, Campo, Capoliveri, Porto Azzurro, Rio Elba and Rio Marina. The inhabitants are circa 30.000, 10.000 of which live in Portoferraio. The climate is particularly mild and winter is reduced to two or three months a year. It’s considered one of the greenest islands of the Mediterranean, it’s territory is covered by luscious woods and Mediterranean bush scrub. Its coasts are rugged and offer an enormous variety of beaches and inlets of different sizes over 140 covering 150 km. of coast. Elba’s sea is its major attraction offering magnificent sea beds in transparent waters where one can swim from April until October. The Island’s economy is prevalently based on tourism; agriculture and iron mines that once constituted the principal source of income for the inhabitants, have now been abandoned. Recently vines have been rediscovered and a couple of labels offer a good production. Others offer liquors that taste of Elban oranges and lemons. Biological agriculture and apiculture have become important voices for the islands economy; just as has fishing that finds its wealth in the surrounding waters. Elba Island |
